Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of self-compassion training on distress tolerance and emotion regulation difficulties in patients with chronic illnesses. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and a control group, the study targeted patients with chronic conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and those undergoing dialysis, who visited Shahid Beheshti Clinic in Babol in 2023. Participants were selected through convenience and random sampling, and data were collected using standardized questionnaires with confirmed validity and reliability. The study hypotheses were tested using SPSS-25 statistical software. The results demonstrated that self-compassion training significantly improved distress tolerance and reduced emotion regulation difficulties in patients with chronic illnesses. Specifically, patients who effectively practiced self-compassion showed greater resilience in managing emotional distress, exhibited a more adaptive response to life challenges, and modified maladaptive behavioral patterns. By fostering a kinder and more accepting attitude toward themselves, these patients were better able to cope with the psychological burden of chronic illness. Consequently, self-compassion can be considered a valuable emotion regulation strategy, potentially enhancing psychological well-being in individuals facing long-term health conditions.
